Over-the-Counter Dangers and Children

Every year, children DIE from taking children's over-the-counter cough and cold medications.

Potentially life-threatening side effects are suffered by thousands of children because of these medications.

Children overdose on OTC medications even when given the “recommended dose”

Early signs of overdose:

  • Stomach Ache
  • Vomiting
  • Less Energy
  • Lethargy
  •
  • Irritability
  • Fast Heart Rate
  • Fast Breathing
  •

NOTE:  It is difficult even for doctors, to tell the difference between the early signs of overdose and “the normal” symptoms of a child being sick — always tell the doctor if you have given over-the-counter cough and cold medications to your child.

Late signs of overdose: Irregular heartbeat, seizures, coma, death.

Medical experts recommend never giving these medications to children under 6 years old.

The CDC, FDA, and the American Academy of Pediatrics warn about the dangers of using conventional children's cough and cold medications.

Below are medical references on the general toxicity, heart problems, neurological problems, allergic reactions, and psychosis associated with children's cough and cold medicine.  Included are also studies of addiction and abuse to these medications by older children. Also included is evidence that indicates conventional children's cough and cold medicines are no better than placebos in relieving cough.
